It has been known that a percentage of obese people have this health condition due to genetics. However, a study directed by the Imperial College in London published in Nature on February 3 showed that a genetic mutation that involves the deletion of over 30 genes may be a factor that contributes to obesity in 0.7% of obese people. These are way too many genes for a human being to miss!

This genetic deletion was not found in healthy individuals. The function of these genes remain unknown but scientists speculate that some of these genes contribute to autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia. It is interesting how some of these genes with possible neuronal functions can lead to obesity.

It is possible that a new genetic test may be available for screening people for genetic forms of obesity in the future.
